This past Sunday morning I preached on how we need to take our service to those in our community up to new level. After one of the services a lady told me how something happened to her father the previous week that illustrates this ministry of helping people. She gave me her permission to share it with you.
She told me that here Mother and Father live in the DFW metroplex. Her father is an insulin dependant diabetic. Earlier in the week he had surgery to put in a pacemaker. He was released and went home the day before the big snowfall on Thursday Feb.11. Once he and his wife got home, and after the big snowfall, they lost power. This is not a good situation for anyone; especially not a diabetic recuperating from surgery.
Here is what happened. The members of the Church, young and old alike, while dealing with the snowfall and problems of their own, heard that a fellow believer was in an even more precarious position. The people of the Church mobilized and began helping this couple. Since he needed food regularly, because of his diabetes, families brought meals by like clockwork. Phone calls were made to check in to see if they needed anything. Others came by and helped in anyway they could.
After I heard that story I thought to myself, “That is the body of Christ in action.” After I heard that story, I thought of how well Fannin has ministered to families in need. For that I am thankful. After I heard that story, my soul began to long for our Church, and all Churches everywhere, to embrace a renewed and deepened commitment to more fully help those in the Church and the community who are in need.
In Acts 11.27-30, we learn that God uses the Church that helps people in need. Let’s be a Church that God uses. Let it start right in each of our hearts. Let each of us decide to be a person that God uses, so we can do an even better job of being the Church that God uses.
