Title: A Lucky Child?

No, I have not died. Yes, it has been several weeks since I blogged. I was on vacation and then went to Children’s camp as a sponsor. But I am back in the saddle again…at least until I leave for a mission trip to Eastern Europe. I just finished a book last night titled The Lucky Child. It is the story of Thomas Bergenthal and his experiences as a Jewish child in the Nazi concentration camps of WWII. Yes, it will move you deeply. He tells of his family’s life in a ghetto city where Jewish people of that area were rounded up. He describes the pain and horror of what took place in the concentration camps. With a heavy heart you read how he and his father were separated from his mother and then how he, while still not even 10 years of age, was then separated from his father. You read about his life alone in the camps. After the war, he is eventually reunited with his mother and ends up in America. Once here he is educated in law in New York and Harvard. His career and work are exemplary. His life, although it started out brutally, ended up like a dream. This may sound like a sad book to read. In some ways it is. In other ways it is something that lifts your spirit as you see the invisible hand of God guiding the life of this small boy. Of all the things described in this book, the saddest one is his statement of how he does not believe in God because of the horrors of the war. I understand his sentiment. Yet, it stuns me that in the midst of all the different circumstances he endured, and how he kept coming out on top, he fails to see the sovereign hand of God. This book could be titled A Child carried by Grace. You can borrow my copy if you like. It is probably in the library downtown. Of course, you can pick up a copy at a local bookstore or online. Enjoy the read.
