Jesus said, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11.28-30
Some weeks are more draining than others. There are different ways that life drains you. On one level you have those things that drain you physically. This is usually the result of a taxing demand on the body. At another level you have those things that drain you emotionally. The things that drain you at this level come from the weight that rests on your heart. Maybe it is an accumulation of issues, either work related or private, which suck the life out of you. Sometimes it is the heartache you have for others as you see them go through difficult times. It can also be the stressors in your own life.
What is interesting about this is that one type can affect the other. When you are worn out physically, it can affect you emotionally, and vice versa. God did not create us with our lives in neat little compartments. He created us as a unity of the physical and emotional. That means we are not separate parts, but an integrated whole. So, if you are having a week where you feel low on energy, drained, consider the following. While recognizing that our physical and emotional lives are connected, try to find out which area is the primary cause for your feeling drained. Then, take steps to remedy the situation.
Let me use myself as an example. Today, I feel drained. I look at the emotional things in my life and do not see them as the primary cause. Then, I look at the physical side of things and see that I have been in overdrive for the last several weeks; there has been something to do or a meeting to attend just about every night, and something to do every weekend. Remedy? Take the afternoon off to rest at home, and maybe take a nap. Also, I need to say “No” to the next few invitations. These two simple things will likely rest my body and invigorate my soul. Try it sometime.
