My Bible reading plan has had me in Leviticus this week. The book of Leviticus is full of God's laws and commands for the people of Israel. It includes instructions about dealing with mold in their houses and skin diseases.Going through it I've often thought, "And what does this have to do with me?" Today God answered my question.
He hit me upside the head when I read 22:31-32.
Keep my commands and follow them. I am the LORD. Do not profane my holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who makes you holy and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD.
Yahweh (LORD) had brought the Israelites out of Egypt. He redeemed them from slavery. He chose them to be His own people. He set them apart from all the nations of the world. He bought them; they belonged to Him.
Sound familiar? That's exactly what God has done for us. We were in slavery to sin - lost and without hope in this world. But then God redeemed us with the precious blood of Jesus. He choose us to be His. He belong to Him. We are not our own. We've been bought with a price.
What does this have to do with Leviticus? Just like the Israelites, God chose us out of the world, set us apart from it and to Himself. Because He is holy we must be holy. Everything we say and do must reflect His holiness and bring honor to His name. God's purpose is for His people to reflect Him. That happens in all the things of our lives - big and little. Our relationships. Our worship. Our work. Our lifestyle. Not like the world. Like our holy God.
